Hello my friends, and welcome to Steps To Simple! I’m Cass Vandenhaak, and I’ve been dedicating this corner of the world to simplicity and organization since 2014.

In the summer of 2013, my partner and I went through a stressful time financially and emotionally. We were busy trying to ‘keep up with the Jones’ by getting married, starting a family, buying a house, filling it up, financing a car, yadah yadah yadah… and we were struggling to keep up. These were all good things in and of themselves, but the way they came about in our lives as part of a self-inflicted imaginary competition made us feel burnt out, frustrated and unhappy. The question that kept stewing in our heads was “Isn’t there another way to do all of this?”

Turns out, there IS another way! We stumbled across the idea of minimalism and tiny living, and were struck for the first time by the realization that we had the freedom to choose our own life path. We had the freedom to be radical,  to be ‘crazy’, to choose the unconventional. Most of all, we had the freedom to make choices that reflected what was uniquely important to our small family.

This led us to give away/get rid of roughly 80% of our belongings, not for the sake of seeing how little we could get by with but for the greater purpose of surrounding ourselves only with the things that we loved and used and enjoyed.

In 2015 we gutted our basement, even going so far as to dig it out to create a bit more space. We redesigned the space, put in a 600 square foot custom apartment, moved in and called it home. We’ve been living in the space since September of 2015 and loving almost every minute of it! (Just trying to keep it real.)

In the early months of 2016, I quit my job and made the bold choice to follow my heart and start a business doing what I love, combining style with organization and simplification! Over a period of months, I developed a process with which to teach others how to simplify their lives effectively through their closets, how to define their true style, build a capsule wardrobe, gain clarity, strengthen confidence and blaze their own paths.

I’m a personal stylist, simplicity coach and organizational expert rolled into one, and my main goal is to empower you to create your best future with what you already have. I started Steps To Simple in order to coach you through the process of discovering what matters to you and learning to let go of everything that does not. I am inviting you to take part in the journey with me to find contentment, not just with the amount of things that we own or wear, but ultimately with ourselves.

I can’t wait to connect with you, and learn and grow together!
