Downsizing: Where To Start.

It’s almost a new month, and it’s a new beginning! Nothing says ‘Fresh Start’ to me quite like a huge cup of coffee and a to do list that I’m excited about.

Some might find it strange that I’m starting a series about decluttering right as the holiday season commences, but I assure you that this was intentional! As the holiday parties and the ‘shopping season’ descends upon us, I know I’m not the only one who would like to stay grounded and intentional about simplicity.

That said, let’s talk about how to get started on this whole journey anyway. There’s a few things you’ll want to know before going gung-ho on your stuff!!! So without much ado….

9 Tips On Where To Start:

  1. Head to your nearest liquor store and stock up on sturdy cardboard boxes.
  2. Pick one room or closet or drawer, don’t declutter elsewhere until this is completed!
  3. Begin by shedding the visual excess first. There will be time to go deeper later, as you learn more about what is the most important to you, what adds value to your life and what is beautiful to you.
  4. Accept that things will get a little worse before they get better. (Only you’ll actively be doing something about it, so in my experience you have a lot more grace for yourself regarding your own mess.)
  5. Give yourself elbow room and lots of grace. Be kind to yourself and the others sharing your home with you.
  6. Accept that this will be an ongoing process. If you are truly committed to living with less, there will always be ‘stuff management’. However, the toughest part is now! Your life IS going to become a little simpler, and a whole lot more spacious.
  7. Take your time. If you declutter and simplify too quickly, you will not be creating a habit that will stick.
  8. Be patient. Push ahead. Create a space that feels good to be in, that makes you feel lighter as opposed to weighted down.
  9. This is not a contest. It is a lifestyle change that is intended to help you enjoy YOUR life more.

Hopefully these tips will help as we begin by tackling the kitchen in the next post! If you have any questions, please leave a comment. I promise to address them all!

Best,
Cass

I started reading Step 1 and thought – wise, very wise!…but then I read the rest of it and realized your intentions were more practical. Lol. Made me smile.

note: glass or two of wine never hurts when tackling your closets!
